Mission
The mission of Our Sisters' School is to educate and inspire middle-school girls from the Greater New Bedford area to reach their full potential in a safe, supportive and challenging environment. Our Sisters' School provides a quality education and welcomes girls from diverse faiths, races and cultures to our unique learning environment.

About Our Sisters’ School
In September 2008, the school -- located at 145 Brownell Avenue, across from Buttonwood Park on the corner of Hawthorn and Brownell -- opened its doors to a select group of 30 fifth- and sixth-grade students from the greater New Bedford area. Over the next two years, the school expects to grow to include grades seven and eight, and to have an eventual total enrollment of 60 fortunate young women.

Education is the most important resource of the 21^st century.” President Obama issued that call to arms when he spoke in Cairo in the beginning of June. There is no better proof of the realization of his quote than Our Sisters’ School. 

First Year Comments and Perspective
Three years ago, the concept of an independent middle school to serve the inner-city girls of New Bedford and their families, was only a dream, today it is a reality. The hard work and inspiring leadership provided by a committed board and the countless hours put in by community members, staff and volunteers have come together to produce a unique and enriching academic environment in which the girls of OSS have clearly thrived.

Although we learned a great deal in year one just passed, and made necessary changes, our mission itself remains the same. Toward that end, the teachers of OSS, art and lead teachers, mentors and tutors – have been remarkable in their tireless efforts; all have contributed to making the academic effort a success. Outreach to the community has been outstanding. The students have learned from and about the community; the community has learned from and about the school. Partnerships have been numerous and productive, and we continue.

We could not have reached this point – or dream of going further still – without the incredible support provided by countless donors who “believe” that Our Sisters’ School has and will make a difference in the lives of the many girls and families it is now our pleasure and responsibility to serve. Many have contributed in one way or another to the building and shaping of our school and ultimately to the idea that education is the most important resource in the world as well as here in New Bedford.
